Dare to Flare

October 1, 2015

J: Sis, I guess great sister minds think alike….you sent me this pic only days after I saw the ad and had been drooling over these pants, but yet was scared out of my pants to wear them. I saw them and could only see the outfit that Karlie was wearing…and I want to try the 70’s inspired trend! Help sissy…take the fear away…how do you wear these and not look like a Karlie clone…

A: Good luck cloning Karlie Kloss, but if you figure out how, do share! It’s so important to let the look inspire, not dictate, you. When I look at these pants, I by-pass the unique color and buttons and treat them like a pair of jeans. I paired them with seven different shirts from my closet to show how versatile these, at-first-site unique, pants truly are.

J: Will do (on the cloning)…you can see past the piece and add style…and individuality…it amazes me. But I also want to know, if I, your younger (that’s right, haha!) yet significantly SHORTER sister could pull off these pants as well???

A: That’s a valid question. So true that not everything will work for everybody. Here’s the deal, those pants make Karlie’s legs look LOOOONG, they make my legs look LOOONG, and they’ll make your legs look LOONG! It’s fine to take one of these looks and duplicate it from head to toe…

J: I feel a BUT coming…and from both our ends (yeah, yeah, I know how that sounds). My BUT is that I want to learn ways NOT to duplicate, and your BUT is…

A: Amazing.

J: HA! Yes sis, your booty-butt pop is amazing, however, I meant your theoretical BUT…dork!

A: Sorry, I just couldn’t resist. BUT…we all represent many different beautiful shapes and sizes. I’m 5’8” so my legs look LOOONG in these pants. Someone who stands strong at 5’2” cannot expect her legs to look like Karlie’s! She has to be excited when her legs look LONG. Do you see what I’m saying?

J: I do!! Let the clothes bring out your unique you…don’t use them to try to look like someone you are not…

A: Nice work my grasshopperJ. Exactly! Like I said, use these looks to inspire you to feel your best and to have fun with a cool pair of pants, not to look exactly like Karlie, me or anybody else for that matter!

J: So, just to clarify, you’re telling me NOT to treat these pants and looks like Rachel’s hair??

A: You crack me up. Our readers are so going to have to brush up on their Friends knowledge aren’t they?

J: Um yes. Sorry about that. That’s how I understand things…all things in terms of Friends…ha! Anyway…I digress…back to the topic at hand… So, sister of mine, on with the fashion show…what is the first look? And remember, keep it slow, keep it basic…but let’s see what you’ve got…I’m new, so could you keep the shoes and the accessories easy for nowJ??? For you though however, I would expect nothing less than multiple amazing shoes and accessories.

A: Of course crazy kid. I’ll show you that a neutral wedge, which even you can wear without killing those running toes of yours, will work with everything. You know me so very well little sis, you are correct, when I wear these looks in real life I will absolutely work other shoes and killer watches and accessories into the mix! Let me show you the way…

Shoes, shoes, shoes! (Kohls for similar black boot, Express tan peep toe boot, Target for similar wedge)

A graphic baseball tee lends a chilled out, but still pulled together vibe. (Tee and pants from Express)

Dare to bare and flare in a crop top! This polyester crop in a 70’s inspired print will leave you feeling groovy! (Express top)

This navy Express One Eleven tank will be one of my staples this fall. Navy looks great on everyone and is a break from your neutral basics black and white. This look is simple but a stunning contrast of colors!

A pretty look for fall, the rich texture of the tan suede coupled with the heavy pant feels equally feminine and strong. (Guess top)

This long sleeved, modestly cropped top is an easy way to pull that 70’s groove on into dropping temps, add a camel floppy hat for even more warmth and interest. (Shirt Aeropostale, similar: Hat Old Navy)

A closet is incomplete without a cozy gray sweater…add one to almost any pant and you’ll have a look that easy and ready to wear! (Sweater, you guessed it, Express)

I am completely digging this top right now! Clearly not a look for everyone, and, later, I may even label it a mistake. BUT, that just means I’m having fun and I encourage all of you to do the same! (Express Tank available at Express in Times Square, check your local Express)

J: Ok, my mind is blown right now…all so cute, but what if I don’t have anything in my closet that will complete one of these looks? Please tell me you scored some of these pieces for a good deal? And BTW, the last look is a little much for me to comprehend…let’s save your crystal ball prediction that slits are the new cut-outs for another day, or blog!!

A: Agreed. And yes, to answer your question, you will cry with how awesome my haul at Express was…so no excuses, you can totally afford these looks!

Wow! Who knew one pair of pants could have so many different looks! Still not sure I could pull them off but you definitely make me think it’s possible!

You can absolutely pull them off! But, if you aren’t sure about that pair, you could still show your flare in a denim pair (less risky but still trendy)! We posted a pair from Express on our ‘Your Closet Wants’ page. Jenn and I both own them and they are super comfortable and versatile!

Love! Please tell me wide bottom pants are back in style! I’m done with skinny legged pants. My long legs want some flare.

So over skinny jeans, so love seeing the flared pants. Like them best with the cropped tops and the tanks. (Wish I could feel comfortable and as cute as you in a hat!) Curious about what bags you are liking for fall.

You would look great in either a floppy or wide brimmed hat…you just have to go for it!
I’m really into suede bags for fall. I like tan suede in saddle bag styles (asos.com has a super cute one for around $80) and deep brown suede in slouchy styles for day. For night, I’m digging minaudiere bags…big enough for my phone, lipstick and credit card…I bought one in blue suede from Marciano. ?
